Huawei unveils HiSilicon Kirin 980, World's First Commercial 7nm SoC

Huawei, the Chinese tech giant on the opening day of the IFA 2018 in Berlin has launched the HiSilicon Kirin 980, the world's first commercial 7nm (nanometre) system-on-chip (SoC) which packs the artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu announced SoC, based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company's (TSMC) 7nm process. For starters, the 7nm process delivers 20 percent enhanced SoC performance and 40 percent increased efficiency compared to the existing 10nm process. Huawei has beaten Apple to become the second-largest global smartphone seller in 2nd quarter of 2018, the first being Samsung.

Mr.Yu addressing the gathering informed that previous year, the company has shown the world the potential of on-device AI with the Kirin 970 and now in 2018, they designed an all-round powerhouse that not only features outstanding AI capabilities, but also brings cutting-edge raw performance to consumers. "The Kirin 980 is the ultimate engine to power the next-generation productivity and entertainment applications," he added.

1 square cm die size packs 6.9 billion transistors in the TSMC 7nm process technology enabled Kirin 980, which means it is 1.6 times the previous generation one. Also the Kirin 980 is the first SoC to be equipped with Cortex-A76 cores, which states that it is 75 percent more powerful and 58 percent more efficient to previous generation one.

The CPU in Kirin 980 is packed with the two two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores; two high-efficiency Cortex-A76 cores; and two extreme efficiency Cortex-A55 cores. Kirin 980 thus has potential to perform quicker app launch times, better multi-tasking and a generally smoother user experience. It also improves users gaming experience.
